In May we flew to Lanzarote which is the most easterly island of the Canary Islands. It was four months before my surgery.
Lanzarote is least touristy, completely different of other Canary Islands. Black volcanic island recommended me my brother who went there for the second year in a row with his family. I booked a return flight with Ryanair from Bologna to Lanzarote for 3 people for just around 300 EUR. To me that seemed an excellent deal. I also booked a 4 star hotel with bookings.com for one week including half board buffet for 400 EUR and rented a Toyota Auris for 200 EUR per week. All together our Lanzarote holiday was half a price the tourist agencies in our country were offering. So we drove to Bologna and left our car at the airport.
From Ljubljana to Bologna I drove for about 3 – 4 hours. I didn’t had any problems with driving, no fear and panic attacks. Also during our vacation at Lanzarote I had no problems whatsoever, maybe only strange head aches and a little bit of balance problems now and then. My wife said that during our vacation on Lanzarote I was still normal. Of course I was normal, I was on vacation.
Lanzarote was really amazing island. We rented our car at the airport and had to drove all the way to the other side of the island on Playa Dorada which was also our hotel’s name. While we drove to the other side of the island, we saw many huge volcanic rocks by the road. It felt like we were on another planet.
Besides beautiful landscapes Lanzarote had a lot of attractions associated with Cesar Manrique who was an artist and architect born in Arrecife in Lanzarote. His sights Mirrador del Rio, Jameos Del Agua, Jardin de Cactus and his Cesar Manrique foundation were amazing. Also Lanzarote had to offer a lot of beautiful and unspoilt beaches, it was just too bad that the sea was a little bit too cold for us. The air temperatures during the whole week were moving from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and the wind was blowing 24 hours a day.
For the first time in my life I ate a squid the size of a whole plate. I order grilled squids and got only one big squid. I just put some lemon over it and it was delicious.
But what I remember the most from our holiday in Lanzarote was our experience with the snake….
One evening there was a reptilian show in our hotel. And at the end of that show they had two large pythons. One of them was brown and another was yellow. The man who hosted the show was looking for volunteers who would dare to have the snake hung around their necks. A few older children had the courage to come on the stage and at least few of them managed to hold the snake around their neck. My son looked at them with those big eyes of his and I knew what was going on in his head. It was not long before we were provoked if we had the courage to come on to the stage so they could photograph us with the snake. My wife immediately said “I am not going!” I looked at my son and asked him “Do you want to hold the snake?”. He was all excited and immediately answered “yes, daddy let’s go!” We walked on the stage and the man hung a snake around my neck and my son’s neck. In one arm I held my son and in another I held the snake by its neck. The feeling was nothing special to me, It was like holding some children’s cold rubber snake. But my son was so happy and excited when he was holding snake’s tail and had a snake around his neck. So the man started to convince my wife that she must go also on the stage so he could take our family photo. He said to her “come on, it’s a family photo. It’s a family photo”. He was saying to her that she would ruin a family photo if she wouldn’t go on the stage. My wife had finally enough of him and she got on to the stage. So they took a picture of us with brown and yellow python. Son was so happy I can still see his joy and happiness on that picture where he is holding the yellow python.
Of course they wanted too much money for those two pictures, so what. Memories, which this picture brings back to me and to see my son’s smile, are not measured in euros.
But all good things must come to an end…so after one week we left Lanzarote and our holiday was over. The only one who was happy about going home was our son. For him the best thing was outdoor swimming pool and the snake experience. If it was for him he could be a whole week in a swimming pool fighting with me and playing with water.
In one week in Lanzarote I drove 600 kilometres and did not had any problems. But night driving form Bologna to Ljubljana was basically one big nightmare. I spent a lot of energy concentrating on the road. Headlights of oncoming traffic were very iritating. I think I had to make a few stopovers because my eyes were so annoyed with those oncoming headlights. This was due to my pineal gland cyst since I never had any similar night driving problems in my whole life.
